D’s Old Lady

It was dark out when I opened my eyes this morning, it was early still. My feet were throbbing and I felt light-headed, like I might just float away. I could hear D, sound asleep, breathing softly beside me. Prickles of emotion expanding in my chest. I smiled widely, all through my soul. A rogue tear streaked its way across my face and splashed down on the pillow. It really happened; no I wasn’t dreaming. I have a husband now. We are wed.

I savoured that moment, my first waking moment as someone’s wife. Lying there in the dark, listening to my love slumber and running through the memories of the night before, I realized how truly magical my life is. And I vowed to myself in that moment that I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to keep our marriage and our lives magical, every day. We’re gunna do this thing right, I know it in my bones.

Yesterday was so surreal. The months leading up to the wedding were fraught with stress and discord. But I see now why people are willing to go to such lengths. This is your chance to show everyone the fullness of your coupled hearts and how powerful they can be when dialled to maximum amplification. And we know now that ours can bring down the motherfucking house if we want ’em to.

I never wanted perfection. I just wanted something real. And I have that with D.

      • Mostly I’ve been working on the script for a graphic novel… it’s a historical Fantasy police comedy about werewolves and vampires solving crimes and kicking arse in Elizabethan times! So, lots of mythology to work out and emblems to design, etc…. good geeky fun! Haven’t got anyone to draw it, tho… so that’s a pretty big snag…

Other than that, I’ve been trying to keep warm in the bitter British winter… shivering seems to be good for burning calories, so I guess that’s the silver lining!

Glad to see you guys are having a blast on your honeymoon, btw… and I’m looking forward to reading more posts from you in the new year! 🙂

      • That is so awesome! If I could draw worth a crap, I’d totally offer to pitch in and help you get your project off the ground. If you do find someone, I’d love to see a first draft of it. That is exactly the kind of thing I love to read.
Speaking of graphic novels, have you read “Y: The Last Man” yet? It is fantastic!

  1. I remember my first morning after and I felt the same way. So happy to have been part of your special day. I love you both so much and I couldn’t be happier for you. The wedding was so so so so so so much fun. My feet still hurt today as does my body and head. And really, you were the most beautiful bride I’d ever seen.

    • Thanks Peattie! I’m so glad you had fun. That was very important to me, that people had a fun awesome time.

It’s so weird, after we got introduced and sat down for dinner we both felt on display and like we needed to keep the fun going. I think I know what chimps at the zoo feel like now, always having to put on a show haha. Can’t wait to see you again and catch up now that you’re back at work full time. Hope it’s going well 🙂

  2. Er, I think you have a limit on “nested” comments, so I can’t reply to your comment above… but if I could reply, my reply would be: No, sadly I’ve been very slack when it comes to buying comics over the last few years… but I’m trying to catch up now! If I’m expecting readers to buy my books, it’s only fair that I do the same for other people…
